Introducing
ROMEO
the World’s
Tallest Living Steer!
We agree that Romeo is a really big deal!
But he’s so much more than just tall!
Please read his story of resilience and hope.
He is a true testament to the power of second chances.
Our journey with Romeo began when he was merely 10 days old. We received a call from someone who had rescued him from the harsh reality of a dairy farm, where his fate was sealed to a veal crate. You see, in the dairy industry, male calves like Romeo are often deemed as mere byproducts, their destinies predetermined by profit margins. But fate had a different plan for Romeo that day.
As Romeo grew into the gentle giant he is today, we recognized his intelligence and loving nature. Unaware of his enormity, he leaps with joy and finds pleasure playing with his sanctuary friends. He eagerly investigates anything that piques his interest, showcasing a charming blend of cleverness and fascination. He knows his name, loves his human and animal companions, and sometimes attempts to jump into our arms with pure excitement.
Caring for a supersized steer like Romeo brings its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to getting him the right vet care. Regular animal hospitals might not have the equipment to handle him, which can make it tricky to give him the help he needs in emergencies. From day to day, his height has the most impact on his appetite. He chows down on a whopping 100 pounds of hay every single day, plus grain and treats.
At six years old, Romeo is already defying the odds typically associated with Holstein steers. In a sanctuary or similar compassionate setting, where Romeo receives the care, nutrition, and veterinary attention he deserves, his horizon stretches far beyond the typical lifespan endured within the confines of the industry of animal agriculture. Instead of facing a fate measured in mere months, Romeo is poised to thrive for at least 15 years or more.
We are thrilled that Romeo can serve as an ambassador representing all farmed animals. Discovering individual stories can deeply inspire compassion. We are grateful for the chance to spread awareness of his journey and shed light on the injustices within the meat and dairy industries. Our aim is to encourage people to recognize that animals exist alongside us, not solely for us.
